Color speaks directly to our feelings and Nancy uses color to tap human emotion. She works with many thin, transparent layers of paint to create a subtle, lush color that you can almost fall into. Color depth is very important in her painting; in some areas, you can see down to the base color. Nancy Stephani creates patterns to build and saturate her shading and texture in each work. Stephani seeks to capture that certain shade of tropical lagoon at noon aqua that ‘makes me want to cry’.

Nancy has written an insightful statement that I believe is an overarching truth and applies to both artist and a viewer: “Paintings really don't speak at all. They traffic in another kind of communication. Something more visceral...as if our heart, lungs and guts have eyes and project what they see on some inner screen. An inner kind of primordial landscape that has never encountered the World.  I can, and do, make up stories about them; and sometimes they're very good stories, but they are never complete. Just random paragraphs in a really long novel. The story is just a very superficial narrative floating on a vast sea of experience that is beyond comprehension.”
