Jose Diniz

‘José Diniz was born in Niterói and lives in Rio de Janeiro. He studied photography at UCAM (Cândido Mendes University) in Rio de Janeiro. Jose Diniz is interested in exploring the sea as a space of specific physical, emotional, and visual experiences. The ocean environment

presents opportunities to interact with the ocean as a living breathing element along the coast of Uruguay and Rio De Janeiro. The Photographic works exhibited here are entitled ‘Periscope’. The artist purposefully positions the camera at periscope depth making the waves and ocean appear more solid than liquid. The artist uses waves as an object: a device to crop or hide his subject in the water. In Islandscapes, José Diniz presents the development of research that has been conducted on territories, cities, and daily routes. With a focus on the islands of Rio de Janeiro, he observes how these untouched, unreachable territories, in the middle of the oceans, distance him from the urban landscape. Diniz explores these spaces captured with his lenses The viewer is led to this distance from the urban by contemplating the photographs, prints, and video that José Diniz presents to us, in his poetic geography of which he tells us:

“As a constant observer, these fragments of land on the horizon induce me to daydreams and curiosity. for its hidden side. They distance me from the concrete and create a desire to experience loneliness and separation from the real world.”
